The mill museum and the ‘rosmolen’ (=horse mill) on the domain ‘groote hoef’
The "Groote Hoef", the first abbey-farm on Lommel territory, was donated to the church of Hilvarenbeek (NL) in 990. This event made "Loemele", the later Lommel, appear in written history and thus this domain is the cradle of our town.
The domain locates the following buildings.
- There is a mill museum in the sheep-fold. You will find working models of mills, mill parts and old engines. On simple request the organisation "Living Mills" will give you a guided tour.
- In the renovated house-stable and the barn, there is a restaurant-café where visitors can enjoy this historical location with a snack and/or a drink.
- In front of the mill museum a "Rosmolen" (= horse mill) is situated. It is a small but unique restoration of this type of mill with marvellous interior. A farm horse, going in a circle, causes the turning.
