Attention! The sand plain is closed to the public between 30 July and 31 August. Hiking and biking is still possible outside the fence.
The Lommel Sahara is a nature phenomenon! In the middle of an extensive coniferous forest, you will suddenly find yourself in a desert landscape, exceptionally beautiful in the middle of the coniferous woods. The deep blue lake and the unique fauna and flora make a walk to the Lommel Sahara a trip that you will never forget.
It may sound strange but the protected nature area thanks its origin to … nature pollution. The emanation of the former zinc factory made the green planting disappear like snow in summer. The result: a withered landscape, covered by white sand. In order to avoid the extension of the sandy plains, a new forest was planted a long time ago. The beautiful eye-catching result is this unique nature reserve.
In the immediate vicinity you will find the Kempen Canal and the equally unique pedestrian bridge. This strong piece of architectural skill will lead you to an un equalled walking and nature area!
